Cayo Coco

Discover the tropical charm of Cayo Coco, an ideal destination to disconnect and relax in Cuba

Exploring the key

Cayo Coco in Cuba is located in the central region of the island, its surface of 370 km²1 makes it the fourth largest island in this country; it is famous for its luxurious all-inclusive tourist resorts. It is located in the province of Ciego de Avila and more specifically in the municipality of Morón. It is part of a chain of islands known as “Jardines del Rey”.

The island has its own international airport, Jardines del Rey Airport. Since 2005, tourists can fly directly to Cayo Coco Cuba airport. A previous airport, Cayo Coco Airport has been claimed as a small natural park called El Baga Natural Park. Prior to the construction of Jardines del Rey Airport, tourist flights for the resorts in the area landed at the Maximo Gomez Airport near Moron on the Cuban mainland.

The key is joined to the island of Cuba by means of an artificial way, called pedraplén, of approximately 17 km from length. The construction caused protests by environmentalists because it interrupted the flow of the waves and thus the marine life cycle. Despite initial fears, wild flamingos still live in the shallow waters and can be seen frequently from the artificial road, although not as often as before the construction.

The island of Cayo Coco Cuba is linked by a natural trail to Cayo Guillermo.

On September 9, 2017, Cayo Coco was hit by Hurricane Irma, causing devastation to the strip of hotels it houses, including the Jardines del Rey airport and the nearby towns of Ciego de Avila and Morón.

The islands, which are still largely wild with swamps and bushes populated by wild cattle, have a dozen large international hotels that currently offer some 5,000 rooms: the Jardines del Rey project plans to eventually offer 32,000 rooms. Thae beaches are attractive to tourists and the huge coral reef on the north coast attracts divers from all over the world.
