Exploring Moron in Cuba

Municipality of Moron in Cuba, known as the city of the Rooster. It is located to the north of the province of Ciego de Ávila in the central region of Cuba, under a key area of vegetation and very beautiful beaches, infinitely escorted by the imposing Current of the Gulf. It’s the second most populated municipality of the province and in the key area this nailed one of the biggest tourist poles of the country. It has patrimonial values that express a clear urban and territorial identity.

Founded in 1543, three centuries before provincial capital Ciego de Ávila, Moron Cuba is known island-wide as the Ciudad del Gallo (City of the Cockerel), for a ‘cocky’ bullying official in the colonial era who eventually got his comeuppance. The city has architecture to match its years, with more, better-preserved examples of those Ciego de Ávila column-flanked facades.

Main Sights

  • Terminal de Ferrocarriles
  • Museo Caonabo
  • Parque Agramonte
  • Cockerel

Museo Caonabo

In among the teeming sidewalks and peeling colonnades, this well-laid-out museum of history and archaeology is housed in Moron former bank, an impressive neoclassical building dating from 1919. There is a rooftop mirador (lookout) with a good view over town.

Parque Agramonte

Small park in the northern part of Moron Cuba with a small church and an old theater. The access road to Laguna de la Leche branches north from here.

Railway Terminal

Moron has long been the main railway crossing in central Cuba and boasts the most elegant railway station outside Havana. Built in 1923, the building is neocolonial, although a more aerodynamic Art Deco look is hidden inside. Equally striking is the coloured glass skylight. Like many things in provincial Cuba, it is crying out for comprehensive restoration.

Moron is famous for its emblematic cock, which stands guard at a roundabout in front of the Hotel Moron Cuba, in the southern end of the city. It is named after an “arrogant” and abusive sixteenth century official who got his just desserts from the locals and was expelled from the city. The rooster crows (electronically) at 6 a.m. every morning.
