Cayo Largo del Sur

Discover the tropical charm of Cayo Largo, an ideal destination to disconnect and relax in Cuba

Exploring Cayo Largo del Sur

Cayo Largo del Sur in Cuba is a coral key in the shape of a bar with modern and comfortable hotels. It is located in the Caribbean Sea, at the eastern end of the Canarreos Archipelago. It constitutes one of the Cuban tourist destinations par excellence, isolated and quiet, well preserved; it has the exact image of a Caribbean site with coconut palms, beaches of fine white sands and turquoise waters where turtles still come to lay their eggs. It has beautiful coral reefs where fish and crustaceans live.

No permanent Cuban settlement has ever existed on the Cayo. Instead, the island was developed in the early 1980s purely as a tourism enterprise.

Cayo Largo del Sur is largely frequented by Italian tourists – several resorts here cater exclusively to them. The other all-inclusives are less picky. The heavenly beaches surpass most visitors’ expectations of Caribbean paradise and are renowned for their size, emptiness and nesting turtles. There’s also a profusion of iguanas and birdlife, including hummingbirds and flamingos.

History

The name responds to the elongated form, which is complemented with a history whose origin goes back to the time of the aborigines, because in that portion of land were located remains belonging to the Siboney culture.

Cayo Largo del Sur was also a 1494 point of travel for Admiral Christopher Columbus linked to numerous corsairs and pirates who operated in the extensive waters of the Caribbean Sea.
